Gay couples hope vows are forever

LONG BEACH - Braced for disappointment, Nancy Ambroff sat glued to her computer screen on May 15, waiting for a California Supreme Court decision on the legality of a state ban on same-sex marriages.

Ambroff and her partner of 17 years, Kelly Legaspi, had considered themselves married for the better part of two decades, but had struggled with legal rights in a state that would not allow them to be married in the eyes of the law.

When the decision came in, Ambroff said she was shocked that the court had ruled in favor of lifting the ban, making same-sex marriage legal in California.

"We had been used to so many disappointments," Ambroff said.

On Tuesday, same-sex couples from as far away as South Carolina will come to Long Beach to exchange
